Hi you curious ones!!
I bought the genuine basket-case a few years back. Several friends and acquaintances were of the opinion that I had definately lost my marbles buying such a wreck, but it interested me, as firstly it was complete and no doubt it would be a challenge to get it on it's feet again. We must all agree that a Dart is not the dream car we've always wanted, but it's basically good quality british iron (except for the sill beams) and after lots of enquiries I decided that it wasn't a bad purchase. I've been in the vintage and veteran car scene for many years, so had a good background to help me on my way.
As you can see by the photos, I was (and still am) kept busy - two years up to now and about one more to go. I'm retired now, so have time, with a Sunbeam Alpine as the next project and after that comes a small steam-car!! I'm not the sort to sit around and twiddle my thumbs.
The body had been badly chopped to make room for an american V8 and this had to be re-built, including a new transmission tunnel. Also all the steel supports and seats rails laminated into the floor had turned to rust and had to be re-placed. A new support sub-frame was laminated into the rear as anchors for the rear belts. I was lucky with the engine and (auto-) box which came from a saloon, but the sump had to be modified as per Dart and the central water-pump had to stay - as you can see, it's a budget job and some people wanted horrendous prices for bits. Also, ich habe vor mehrere Jahre die absolute Schrottkiste gekauft. Viele Freunde und Bekannte waren der Meinung dass ich dann nicht mehr ganz sauber war, aber für mich war es interessant da es komplett war und ohne Zweifel wäre es eine Herausforderung es wieder auf die Beine zu bekommen. Wir wollen im klaren sein, dass eine Dart nicht der Traumwagen die wir alle haben wollten, aber der ist mehr oder weniger gute englische Qualität (außer manche Stahlträger) und nach viele Nachfragen, bin ich zu der Meinung gekommen dass er doch nicht so schlecht war. Ich bin Jahrelang in der Oldtimerszene gewesen und habe entsprechend Kenntnisse.
Wenn man die Photos betrachtet, sieht man daß ich zu tun habe und tun muß - zwei Jahre sind vergangen und ich schätze eine noch. Als Rentner habe ich Zeit und der nächste Project in Form einer Sunbeam Alpine steht in der Garage! Danach kommt mein Dampffahrzeug. Ich sitze nicht rum...............
Der Aufbau war schwer beschädigt - man wollte eine Ami V8 einbauen und daß musste neu aufgebaut werden sowie eine neue Getriebetunnel. Alle einlaminierte Stahltäger und Sitzschienen sind zum Roststaub geworden und mußte ersetzt werden. Ich stellte auch eine neue Hilfsrahmen her um als hintere Sicherheitsgurtaufnahme zu dienen. Mit dem Motor und Getriebe vom Limousine habe ich Glück gehabt, mußte aber die Ölwanne modifizieren wie Dart - wie man sieht, ist es ein Budgetauftrag und manche Leute wollten horrende Preise für Teile haben.
